Passenger Trains > Stadler Built Caltrain EMU Set at Denver 23 Feb 2021

Union Pacific moved Stadler built Caltrain double decker electric train on TEXX flatcars from Salt Lake City, UT, to North Yard, Denver, CO, February 23, 2021.  The cars laid over at Union Pacific’s North Yard, and were to be interchanged to BNSF at Denver.  The EMU train set was enroute to Transportation Technology Center, Inc, (TTCI) east of Pueblo, CO.  Stadler refers to this equipment as KISS double-decker EMU.

Forgive my ignorant question as I know nothing about them, but why to levels of doors?

To service high-level and low-level platforms. My understanding is Caltrain is moving towards all high-level platforms.

I thought they will remain not in use unless and until they share habitat with CAHSR.

Nope, CalTrain is in the process of electrifying the line from San Francisco to San Jose as we speak, has been for over a year now.

So which route did UP take between SLC and Denver?  Would they fit the Moffett Tunnel?

The came through Laramie.  The sat in Laramie for over 12 hours, possibly due to the winds.

I wasn't referring to the cars, just the high level doors.

I understand that CalTrain will only use the low platform doors initially.  The high platform door space will be occuoied by seats while the lower doors are in use.

Your question might have made sense in the past, but CA HSR is even more of a disaster than we (including PHall) have realized, so maybe your context didn't make sense.

Caltrain seems much better managed than CA HSR, so they'll probably finish converting the platforms to high level before CA HSR lay their tracks (without catenary). :-) I was taking BART out of Millbrae recently, and observed that the catenary/wires for Caltrain are up near there. Don't think they are energized yet.

Nothing is energized yet, they're not even half way done with construction.

I am wondering about which route they would take.
Looking at these cars as they sit on the flatcars. They look much taller then the stack trains.
And even the auto racks

UP routed the cars via southern Wyoming, on the Green River, WY, to North Yard, Denver, train.  Train was held over 20-hours at Laramie, WY, account high winds gusting up to 90-MPH.  Numerous trains delayed by the high winds.  Interstate 80 was also CLOSED  between Cheyenne to Rock Springs, Wyoming, on 22 Feb.

Nice looking and smart to be able to serve both low and high level platforms.

That is one empty yard!! I don’t think I’ve seen North Yard that empty before.

I guess it’s PSR!

Your "shorty double decker containers" are what they use to haul "dirty dirt" when they need to use an enclosed container.

For the length and height of the car etc. it seems like they are giving up nearly 33% of the space to the doors for egress. NJT Multilevels have two doors on one side for high level only and two doors that have a trap that can be used for lower level boarding. There's seats and windows all within the area of the doors, while the "ends" of these cars seems to leave it a bit more subjective. 

Yeah that design must have the highest ratio of doors to windows of any. I get the reasoning... but it'd be nice if there was some plan to retrofit the lower doors into usable windows if the lower doors become useless for most of the lifespan of the car.

Nice catch. I caught a few cars loaded at the plant in December, but these aren’t wrapped as much as those were and they are ok different flat cars. Wonder where the cars I saw in December went?
