Port Authority fudged LGA AirTrain benefits
Author: SDGreg

https://nypost.com/2021/04/07/documents-show-port-authority-fudged-lga-airtrain-benefits/

"A federal review of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s widely panned LaGuardia Airport AirTrain project accused officials of using “arbitrary” criteria to ensure the plan was chosen above all others — and concluded the railway would likely be slower than just driving there, newly revealed documents show."

"The documents show federal officials specifically called out the Port Authority’s laser focus on the criteria of “minimization of community impacts” for the project, which the feds said unfairly stopped officials from considering alternatives like buses, ferries — or even extending the N and W subway lines from nearby Astoria."  “It also only allows one alternative to possibly meet the criteria.”

“The bus service that goes to LaGuardia is faster than the AirTrain is going to be,” DuLong said. “Every transit expert that I’ve spoken to has said that this is a bad idea, and that there are better options on the table. We just want a meaningful review of those alternatives.”

Not surprising in the least. It is also an inferior solution to the Q70 bus from Woodside and Jackson Hts.

Its Coumo; go figure it he would produce and approve a false narrative!

Has anyone here besides me ever taking the E or F train to Jackson Hts and then the Q70 bus to LGA, with a rollaboard and another bacg or 2?  IT IS THE ABSOLUTE  WORST.   Any sort of airtrain to the terminals would be better.  At least it would be reliable.

Nobody want to ride the #7 to Willets Point (Corona) only to backtrack. Your trip to Jackson Hts would have been more complicated and uncomfortable requiring going not only up from that deep IND subway station, but up to the Flushing el to head east, then take the Airtrain.

It also renders LIRR connection mostly unusable. Nobody coming from Jamaica and points east will wait for a Port Washington Branch train once at at Woodside only to then head west once at WIllets Point.

Either run LGA Airtrain from Jamaica, or extend the Astoria el to LGA itself.

In a world more perfect than this one, I'd like to see a light rail from LGA to a new Metro North + Amtrak station on the Hell Gate embankment.

And high speed ferries like Venice has to its airport.

Yes, an airtrain to Jamaica would make the most sense,  but how many B$ ?    Its not exactly nearby.    Willets pt on the LIRR would be OK for ppl from Manhattan.  The backtrack is not much.  IDK how many ppl travel to LGA from long island, but it wouldnt be convenient.
Taking the 7 train from Manhattan wouldnt be too bad if the had LGA expresses that used the middle track or skipped local stations between QPlaza at Willets, and turned at Willets.

Thank you!  YES!  Any fly-over state commenters need to give this a try. The service has always been awful and (as theoretically slow) as AirTrain to JFK is, it's much easier to transfer from LIRR instead of having to take LIRR to a subway, to a bus, to the plane.

Isn't the Delta terminal at LGA the old Marine Air Terminal? once upon a time flying boats landed and docked there
