Golden Boy! GM50 Passenger Special

Chessie System GP40-2-GM50 is W/B on track one of the Washington Sub, with an employee special. GM-50 was painted gold to celebrate General Motors / Electro Motive Divisons 50th birthday. 9:20AM on 5/7/83 in Elkridge, MD.

As I stated before on another post, B&O GM50 was used on several excursion trips including this one along with passenger cars from Railroad Passenger Cars (RRP) our of Baltimore's Camden Station.  In the photo is the senior conductor Carl Grocie and engineer Bill Bartosh.

Interesting to see a former New Haven parlor-turned-coach behind the GM50.  I believe this car had been Amtrak owned, and usually assigned to the former B&O route west of DC.  Does anyone know who the owner was when the picture was taken, and what has become of the car since?

The first 4 cars were owned by the Pittsburgh Transportation Museum or some similar name.  I'm pretty sure that NH car still exists privately owned and operated in Dennison, OH.  Years ago, the fluting below the windows was removed and replaced by flat steel sheets.  Very, very few of that huge order of New Haven "American Flyer" cars have survived.

I remember working with both Carl and Bill back in the day.  I believe Carl was the the senior conductor on the roster in those days.  He worked the afternoon RDC run from Baltimore to Washington DC and back, Monday thru Friday.

As stated above, many of the other cars were owned by RRP of Baltimore, and the last car, an office car, was owned by the Chessie System, already painted in their new passenger car paint scheme.  Another tidbit; if the Chessie System had decided to operate another steam Safety Express Train in 1982 and beyond, all the passenger cars were to be repainted into the new office car paint scheme, however upper management was no longer interested in these steam trips.
