On a recent trip I covered 1200 miles of both interstate and non-interstate highways in Florida and saw exactly 1 highway patrol and a handful of local police. Not a single car pulled over anywhere. You can speed with impunity. Traffic laws are closer to a suggestion. I ran 300+ miles on I-95 with cruse set 15 over the speed limit and I was getting passed regularly.
Here in Ohio we have highway patrol behind every orange construction barrel so you have to behave yourself. In all seriousness there is nothing that can be done about the crashes. At this point we've known for a very long time that psychologically humans will tend to drive to the safe limit a road is designed for. If you design a flat straight interstate (like I-95 in Florida), people will drive 90+ mph on it and everything will be fine. Are you bragging about living in a police state? To bring this back to railroads, back in the day, the engineer used to be trusted to know his territory, and know where he could go beyond the timetable with regard to speed to make up time on the schedule. We often romanticize those simpler times. Somehow its a victimless crime on a the road, and some states will even send you to jail for it. Interesting that you appear to be unaware of the existence of the North East Corridor and now the Cocoa to Orlando segment of Brightline. It would appear that the problem as presented by you is solved in these segments exactly as they are everywhere else. |
