Southwest Chiefs Blocked at Topeka
Author: sfn2633

A disabled freight train west of Topeka is blocking No. 3 at Topeka and No. 4 at Osage City.  So I do think my trip to the O Scale meet in Chicago with several buddies is off.  No.4-15 has been an unlucky train considering the TopRock derailment and now this problem.

Is there a line 3 & 4 used prior to 1979 that bypassed Topeka ?

Yes. 3 & 4 bypassed Topeka prior to October, 1979.
Don't know the name of the line, but yes. Meanwhile,
15 & 16 The Lone Star stopped at Topeka, but when
they were discontinued, 3 & 4 began stopping at Topeka.

Rather than miss it buy a ticket on SW Airlines and fly to Chicago. One hour 22 minute flight!. Simple!

Or just gas up the car.....

Yes, the " Ottawa cutoff " which is now called the Transcon. It 's a straight shot from KC westward that bypasses Lawrence and Topeka.

There's a bypass around Topeka from Kansas City to Emporia Junction. Would miss Topeka and Lawrence and there'd also have to be "pilot crew" from BNSF.....

Why am I reminded of a picture of Homer Simpson sitting in a recliner in his underwear with the quote "If something's hard to do, then it's not worth doing" by this?

Because this attitude has affected us tremendously in real life in the last decade or two

And nowadays, #3 & #4 would only sit on a siding awaiting all bi-directional freight trains to pass them by.
