Class distinction
Author: GenePoon

A colored patch on Amtrak cars with the new Phase VII livery denotes the class of service in the car.

Green = Coach

Blue = Business Class

Red = First Class.

The first cars with the scheme were released from Beech Grove this week.  TRAINS photo.

I thought green was going to be used on food service cars, guess not! The green on these Amfleets gives off a Capstone “Splotch” vibe…

A yellow band is used by the major European railroads to designate first class cars/seating. Too bad Amtak decided it needed to use a different standard:-(

The phase  7  scheme features two shades of blue  as  noted on the ALC42s and P42s , even the HHP/NPCU 9752 has the two blues , though the darker blue is above the lighter shade on the carbody.  The green blob was only noted on the Acela food cars and the Amfleet Capstone Bistros itended for Acela Regional service .

The report from Trains magazine clearly states the photo of 82588 and 25003 in phase 7 colors were taken at BEAR, Delaware (DPF) this week .

Presume this is happening as Amfleets and other cars are going in for their regular maintenance? Yet Amtrak can't still can't get aggressive to get the Viewliner I Sleepers out of storage at a good pace. Yes, I know two Viewliner I's were released from Beech Grove - but still over a dozen to go by my count.

I'll say one thing for the current Amtrak management.  They certainly have beautiful colors going.  It's like the Pepsi Can era all over again.

And in Japan, first class cars are called green cars. They have a green band or green 4-leaf clover logo.

25003 deadheaded to Boston on March 6th on train 184. It may have returned west on the 7th but suspect that is was sent to Southampton St. yard in Boston for a  a car exchange on the Boston section of the Lake Shore Ltd. . Chicago does not normally do it ,either Sunnyside or Southampton St. do since  they have longer layovers . A couple of days ago a phase 7 Viewlier I sleeper was noted on the Boston section . There are presently 4 phase 7 Viewliner I sleeper ou there.

These 2 Amfleet cars appear to be from 2 different orders.  Notice size of windows on the car side and the doors.  Smaller windows have a
divider down the middle.

Yes, different orders. Car 82588 (left) is an Amfleet I corridor coach. Car 25003 (right) is an Amfleet II long distance coach.

You can put whatever paint you want on the outside of the cars and the general public still will have no clue what car to go to. Cars are now clearly marked "Coach" or " Sleeping Car," with the line numbers (hopefully) correctly displayed, and the average Joe still has no clue. Train crews and attendants still have the continual job of directing people to the correct cars. This painting is just another exercise in futility, and probably an increase in cost.

449 on St. Patrick's  Day had a   phase 7 Amfleet II  coach on the rear to " show a little green" heading west on the B&A today .
