The Goings And Comings Of Amtrak Train KN720
Author: PC1073

The last two Sunday mornings have featured  train KN720, and Amtrak 744
in the new Phase 7 paint. All photos in Philadelphia, at SEPTA's Holmesburg Station.

1. Trailing in a lite engine mov to Philly.
2,3 LHF with 15 loaded ballast for Philadelphia

Not necessarily spectacular, but certainly something a bit different along the Corridor.

Enjoy,

Is Amtrak 744 a GP40 or maybe a GP40-2. The blue color looks like a FEC (Florida East Coast) paint color.

Great pictures.  Out here in "flyover country" we are not accustomed to seeing clean Amtrak diesel motive power.

Amtrak's road switchers / yard switchers often look cleaner to me than the road power.  Maybe the assigned crews get them to the wash racks more frequently?

The blue is part of the Phase VII paint scheme this locomotive is painted in. It is not left over from a previous owner.

I think that is a GP38-2

Nice pictures! Word is these are a group of GP38-3's rebuilds by Progress Rail in Mayfield, KY (?). I hear they are replacing the MP15 500 series units. I believe there was a post awhile back about them. The horns are extremely loud on these!:-0

Be nice if Amtrak could contract out some of the rebuilds and refurbs that are needed for revenue passenger equipment at Beech Grove. Lake Shore and Empire Builder in my May travels reached sold out status on various portions of the trip, sleepers in particularly. And that's with three full sleepers on the Empire Builder (and Lake Shore) including revenue space being sold in the Empire Builder's Superliner Trans-Dorm Sleeper....

Amtrak does not contract out rehab of equipment due to union restrictions.  These new locomotive form Progress Rail were "bought rebuilt", as such they are equivalent to buying a new locomotive.
