Kiwi time
Author: PERichardson

1.  NZ Rys GR12 1475 arriving Auckland, New Zealand on 3/20/78

2.  NZ Rys Silver Fern RM1 at Taihape on 3/22/78.  This was the lunch stop and where the daily Silver Ferns crossed, providing service between Auckland and Wellington on the North Island.  Here I partook of my first ever cold spaghetti sandwich.

3.  Suburban EMUs leaving Wellington station.  3/24/78

Great shots from a great country.  BTW, it is spelled "Auckland".  I loved my time living there for almost two years.

In photo #3 the unit is 'Leaving' Wellington station,  Red tail lights on the Rear.    I worked in this depot back in 64-65.

In 1978 I believe the locomotive classes would still have been Da, Dx, and so forth, just as in the steam era.  I realize DA etc is correct now -- it just doesn't "seem right".....

Best, SZ

Kiwi locos well documented on Wikipedia at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locomotives_of_New_Zealand

For D https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_DA_class_locomotive

1475 was rebuilt as a DC

Progress Rail won the last disposal tender for 12 DC offered in Q2 this year, at least 6, probably 8 had E Crankcases with the heavier crankshaft. PR are parting them out in NZ, and scrapping the hulks there. 12 Cylinder E crankcases suitable for turbocharging are like hens teeth, PR probably wants the core for the service exchange engine program it runs for third world operators

With current Kiwirail photos, ignore the last digit, which is a check added for their computer system
