And she has been suffering a lot since the crash
she caused -- because she was in pain from a wisdom-
tooth extraction, and was tired, and was distracted by
her children playing in the car. She and her 5-year-old
child were both -- amazingly -- unhurt physically, but her
7-year-old was severely disabled because of the crash, and
her 2-year-old child was critically injured.

Yes, she does have a lot to answer for, but I am sure she knows'
better than anyone else what she did wrong, and wishes with all
her heart that she could turn back the clock and that she had
done something else besides get in that car and drive that day,
or, if she had chosen to go somewhere, that she would have gotten
someone else to drive her and her kids where they needed to go.

It is bad enough when you are a parent to lose a child, but to
have done something that severely disabled two of your kids will
cause suffering that is beyond most people's ability to even begin
to understand.

Even the judge in the case said the woman had been punished enough,
and that there were times to show mercy, and this was one of them.

Hmm, her conversations with her children in years to come will be interesting... Explaining that her decision to not at least look or pause in that situation has put them in the situation they're in.
There should be no being distracted for whatever reason as you're about to cross a railroad, especially when you have your children in the car. Their well-being and you staying alive should be priority number one, by a big margin.

Idiocy in my opinion.
