VLI bauxite train M722 (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, today I photographed the rare bauxite train that pass through my town each two months. This time it had the prefix M722 and was leaded by one BB40-2 and two BB40T-2´s. Here are some pics.

By the way:

fca 4830 is former Southern Pacific 8314.
VLI 4821 is former Rio Grande 5406
VLI 4817 is former Canadian Pacific 5627

All them arrived in Brazil in 2005 and were converted to narrow gauge by Vale mining to fca.

I LOVE the dual gauge. I wish there was more in the United States. Only proves that NG is a viable way to go in places. Keep those photos coming...

On the trains in Brazil, with no caboose, do they have a electronic SBU (FRED) on the rear like in North America ?? Looked like the bauxite train had nothing on the last car. Doug

Pedro,
when the BB40s are rebuilt, it appears that the Dynamic Braking grids are removed?

Doug, VLI use a small device called DCA (in english you could say Automated Tail Detector) invented by its own engineers. The DCA check the air pressure in the brake system and send a message to the computer in the locomotive and also to the detectors along the tracks.
The pdf file in the link below explain how it works. It is in portuguese but can be translated to english easily with an appropriated program.
