VLI AC44i on the road (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, pics from my friend Eden Luiz Carvalho Jr (with his permition) showing an AC44i been transfered from VLI São Paulo corridor to FNS - Ferrovia Norte Sul, in Anapolis GO. All the thirty two (32) units will be moved to FNS due to the new GE BBI43 and GT46 allocation in the southeast corridor.

Is there not a railroad connection between the two?

Hi, I forgot to mention that the connection is in narrow gauge and these units are broad gauge.

I count at least forty rubber tires rolling, more if the trailer axles are duallys.

Imagine the cost just to move them and they don't look very clean if they are suppose to be "new" units.

Looks like trailer axles are dual wheeled. That makes 104 tires between the two trucks! Now that is spreading the load!

Congratulations to your friend uǝpƎ on receiving Image Of The Day, and thank you for taking the time to post these very interesting photographs.

By the way, 1076 kilometers = 668.595 miles.

Thank you Pedro for showing up Eden's photos.....thank Eden for us, too! Why couldn't they put meter gauge idler trucks under these units, and move them on the meter gauge line to their new home? How many locomotives are going to be moved?

Each unit is been moved at a base of R$500,000.00 (US $ 125,000.00). VLI will move about 32 units, so we concludes it will spend a lot if money in this operation.
Yes, they are not new units, but locomotices been moved from one point to other in VLI system. They have about 3 to 4 years old.

The trucks move about 10 to 30 km/hour.

Hi, the narrow gauge tracks linking the two broad gauge systens do not have template to accept these standard AC44i's. There are many narrow cuts, tight curves, narrow tunnels and bridges on the way. And the tracks are very bad. So, it is better to move by truck. But when FNS tracks arrives in Mato Grosso state and link with Rumo railroad, the north and south system will be linked by broad gauge too. At leat two new broad gauge railroads are under construction to link FNS with the VLI narrow gauge system.
At least 32 units will be moved by truck. For while, six arrived at FNS.

I would guess the trailer alone has 160 tires.
