MoW train in FBJ yard (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Another series about my trip on Centro Line of former Central do Brazil rr, now operated by MRS.
From Vassouras city (see previous thread in this series here https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?6,5612835 ) I took an eight kilometers long road to Barão de Juparanã, a village that belongs to Valença city. The orign of the station is the primitive Dom Pedro II railroad, that was the third railroad opened in Brazil in 1858. The tracks starting in Rio de Janeiro arrived in that area now occupied by Valença city in 1865 and a station was built with the name of Desengano. In 1889, with end of the Empire era and the beggining of the Republic in Brazil, the railroad had the name changed to Central of Brazil (EFCB). In 1920, Desengano changed the name to Barão de Juparanã.
The term "Juparanã" is of indigenous origin and means, in Tupi Guarani language, "Rio Grande". This homage was paid to the Baron of Juparanã, who became the greatest benefactor of the place. Son of the Marquis of Baependi, they owned several farms on the Valencian banks of the Paraíba do Sul river. The main one, where the family lived the golden times of coffee, was Santa Mônica which today hosts extension activities of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Valença.
The beautifull station in Barão de Juparanã is linked to the richness of coffee plantations in the 1800's to 1930s.
Nowadays, the tracks are operated by MRS and that's why the Centro line has a great amount of trains 24 hours a day. Most of them are empty ore trains going to the mines in Minas Gerais state. It is interesting to say that MRS operates in a carousel system with Centro Line (LC) and Ferrovia do Aço (FA). So, all the trains run in one direction only, going empty by LC and returning loaded by FA.

1) Going from Vassouras to Barão de Juparanã we pass by the small village of Barão de Vassouras, where we find the old station that received the connection with a metric gauge railroad that passed by Vassouras city. From Barão de Vassouras to Barão de Juparanã there was a third track in the past;

2) MRS grease machine in the mainline;

3) The original station in beginning of XX century.

13) Barão de Juparanã housed the first CTC in Latin America opened in 1944 to control the trains between Barra do Piraí (Km 108) and Três Rios (Km 197). The building was donated to Valença city hall years ago;

14 - 15) Inside the old CTC building. The city hall is applying a new paiting in the old CTC and station buildings.
