Desengano bridge (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Here it is another series of my trip last week on MRS Centro Line, of former Central of Brazil railroad - EFCB.
Desengano bridge was openned in 1865 by the Dom Pedro II railroad (EFDP II), the third railroad built in Brazil in 1858. In 1889, the Empire era ended in Brazil and the Republic born with a military government. The old Pedro II railroad had the name changed because it was built during the Emperator Pedro II government. In 1957, the EFCB ended when the government created the RFFSA to manage the railroads in Brazil. Finally, in 1996, the RFFSA was privatized and MRS got the rights of the broad gauge system.of old EFCB.
This bridge is at Km 130 of Centro Line (LC). Since the old RFFSA built the Ferrovia do Aço - FA (Steel Railroad) in the1980's, the ore trains running between Barra Mansa, on São Paulo branch, and Congonhas, on Centro Line, use a carousel system, going empty by Centro Line and returning loaded by Ferrovia do Aço. So, in bolth railroad we see the trains running in one direction only. The exception are the MoW trains and machines that can return in oppose direction on the LC, or the set of Helpers that can return on FA.

1) Desengano bridge in a picture circa 1900;

2) The map showing FA and LC carousel;

3) The westbound view of the tracks and the road lane on the bridge.

Thanks Pedro.  Are there any rules for cars, busses to cross the bridge?  Doesn't look wide enough for two cars to pass each other.

It has just one lane. You need to watch the other end of the bridge and decide if you can go or wait if a car is coming. Sometimes two cars meet on the bridge and one must go backwards. You can see one case like this in the first video.
Buses abd trucks use the bridge too. I saw some while waiting for the trains. Next thread I will show an ore train crossing Desengano bridge.
