A quick tour around EMD plant (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Yesterday afternoon, I did a quick tour in the area around EMD plant. A friend sent me some drone views of EMD plant taken in the morning, so I decided to go there to take a look by myself. Here are some pics with my comments.
1) The plate in the road near the plant;
2 - 3) EMD sheds

4 -5) Progress Rail 8559 received a black primer, but it looks an abandonned project. From my old data, this unit was the Joule sent to US for testing. So, they changed the prototype unit that was used for that Joule project;

6) BB40-3 8152 wearing VLI painting. All 81xx series belongs to Progress Rail and were on leasing with VLI. Some units still in use.

7) Unit 8160 is another BB40-3 stored in the plant;

8 - 9) Unit 8560 is another SD40-2 imported from US for leasing in Brazil.

10) BB40-2 8147;

11 - 12) SD40-2 9585. This and the other Progress Rail SD40- 2s with the gray primer still wearing the original road number from US railroads.

13 - 15) This old SD40-2 received an black primer too. We can perceive it is an abandonned project to a conversion to battery powered "Joule" unit. This could be the second Joule to be produced to Pacifc Harbor Line in US.

16 - 18) Randon pics taken from the screen fence. We can perceive the rear section has the same profile of the SD70ACe and GT46ACe.

Sven, EMD received and order of eight SD70BB from VLI. I do not know if the SD70BBJ to Roy Hill in Australia is under production. It was announced in 2023 that they ordered two of them here.

There is a rumor here that EMD plant will be used to produce CAT engines too.

I don't see many cars/trucks on plant property.  Where do employees park their cars, etc?

I was there on Sunday afternoon, so noboby at work. But EMD has a few employees nowadays due to the lack of locomotive orders.

In Chile,  most workers can't afford cars, so the employers run private buses to bring them to work,  or a construction job site.  Airlines with shuttles offer to pick up flight crews at home   Don't know if Brazil is the same..
