Polishing Away Scratches on DSLR LCD?
Author: prr4828

Hi all,

The LCD on my Canon 30D has some fine scratches from general use and having a toy caribiner pressed against it in the camera bag. The scratches are all fairly light, and only show up when the screen's being viewed in bright sunlight.

Anyone hereabouts have an idea on how I might restore the surface?

Thanks,

We use Brasso on UN-COATED Cell Phone, and two way radio screens.

Brasso and elbow grease should help. Use a soft cloth, an old t-shirt or something similar. Depending how deep the scratches are, the Brasso will remove the sharp edges of the scratches. It's easy enough to clean up. Just don't let it run inside the camera.

Gee. Brasso. Sure reminds me of a time when I wore an awful lot of green and polished boots with Kiwi every day. If it wasn't the boots it was shoes and brass.

On a canon DSLR the LCD cover is just that, a replaceable cover. Canon will replace it for about $20. Or buy the part and do it yourself if you have a good suction cup to remove the old one.

Rather than rubbing it out try a bit of Future brand acrylic floor polish. It will pretty much fill in the scratches and you can buff it to a brilliant shine. ONLY the Future brand. You can also use that in your airbrush to put a finish coat on your models.

I still have a can of Brasso that I bought in basic training in Jan '63 down at Ft. Lostinthewoods,MO. Can has some real miles on it and I still use it when paining brass models. I put a wooden Q tip in my Dremel tool, dip it in the brasso and polish the headlight reflector and bell with it.

I use "Nevr-Dull" to polish out scratches on acrylic watch crystals.
