The 7 D is a pro camera I would hope so. A step above the 50D line of cameras but one step down from the 1D line

7D is clearly a step above the 50D but still not a "pro" camera. As the 1D line is pro and as you said this is still below that. I'm sure you'll see the occasional pro using this as a second body perhaps if anything just to get some more reach out of their telephotos but still technically speaking this is the top of the consumer line. It's obviously Canon's answer to Nikons D300 but still you could argue the Nikon is more pro with its 51 point AF. Canon has shown through their lens lineup that they don't consider the 1.6x format pro.

People in the movie industry are lapping up the 5D Mk II and the 7D. Low noise, huge sensor, (compared to regular movie cameras) small size, and so cheap, they are used as crash cameras.
So maybe the 7D is not still "pro" but it is movie pro.

It is a pro Camera just not top of the line, It fills a niche that a 50D didn't. Not every pro wants or needs to drag a tank out for every shoot. The camera will be in a lot of wild life and sports pro's bag's along with there 1D mark 4 or 1Ds mark 3
