Western Railroad Discussion > Stormy Skies and StreamlinersDate: 03/16/18 15:25 Stormy Skies and Streamliners Author: kyrasmus Las Vegas had some very strong rain (and snow at higher elevations) yesterday afternoon, which left for some remnant storm clouds closer to sunset. A nice westbound Nogales, AZ bound coal train was cresting the Apex grade at 1730. The super advanced AC technology stands as a distant relative to the Streamliners that once were the cutting edge on this route. The flatcar bearing tribute to the "Route of the Streamliners" is all that remains of those iconic passenger trains.

Date: 03/16/18 17:38 Re: coal to Nogales Author: timz The coal runs east thru Beaumont?
How long has that been going on? How often? Date: 03/16/18 18:55 Re: coal to Nogales Author: BNSF-6432 Beautiful lighting and photos!
PQM Date: 03/16/18 21:08 Re: coal to Nogales Author: Margaret_SP_fan VERY nice photos, sir -- and excellent prose, too, describing the shots and scene. Thanks so much for capturing that photo of the culvert with that old UP flatcar with that nostalgic reminder of better days.....
And your third and last photo is a stunner! IOTD for sure. You really nailed that one! And Las Vegas in the blue evening light, just barely there. NICE! Date: 03/17/18 02:06 Re: coal to Nogales Author: vegasrails The last shot at Apex is my favorite

Ronda Thomas Date: 03/18/18 08:35 Re: Stormy Skies and Streamliners Author: Super_C Perfect timing for me. I was going to ask if anybody could tell me where the loaded coal train I saw yesterday (3/17) southbound between Tucson and Nogales originated and its destination. I assume that it is coal to be exported through one of Mexico's west coast ports.
Anyway, dandy shots; especially the glint at Apex with Las Vegas in the distance. Congratulations on IOTD! JCL Date: 03/18/18 09:07 Re: Stormy Skies and Streamliners Author: lapklub Great shots!
I worked in Vegas back in 04-05 and I loved going out to Apex. You were not that far from town but you could pass it off for being in the middle of nowhere especially if you were looking north. Turn around and you're looking at downtown. Awesome place. I loved it there. Mike Date: 03/18/18 10:26 Re: Stormy Skies and Streamliners Author: santafe199 Stunning composition! That jet plane at the left puts this already great photograph way over the top. Even if the plane was a fortunate accident, this is pureĀ artwork in my eyes...

Yes Apex is a nice, quiet place to catch action, and only a few miles away from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. Caught UP 3985 here in (2000?) working up grade (eastbound) from the top of the cuts here. Like that shot of the "Streamliners" flat turned into a bridge.
