DM&IR 332 to Two Harbors
Author: CPengineer

Yesterday I followed Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-0 No. 332 on its way up the North Shore of Lake Superior.  DM&IR SD18 No. 193 went along to provide help getting out of the Two Harbors depot on the return trip (quite a steep grade).

No. 332, which was built by American Locomotive Co. in 1906, is owned by the Lake Superior Railroad Museum.  You might know it better as Duluth & Northeastern 28, which acquired it in the mid-1950s and donated it to the musuem in 1974.  It was restored to service two years ago as D&NE 28.   This year it has been returned to its 1940s appearance and number as DM&IR No. 332, and this weekend marked the first public trips in the new paint scheme.  The track between Duluth and Two Harbors, where No. 332 operates, is the former DM&IR "Lakefront" line.

Next weekend No. 332 will be running out of Duluth alongside a slighty bigger Alco - UP 4014.

DM&IR 332 will be making four one-hour round trips to Lakeside this Saturday, departing the Duluth Union Depot from alongside UP 4014.  Should be quite a day.  Duluth will be one of the most accessible locations on 4014’s tour and the only site where a second locomotive will be in steam (and with others from the museum’s collection on display outside).  While there will be the normal charge for admittance to the museum (well worth it), access to 4014 and 332 is free.

Nice engine! However, I wonder why in heck the main rods, siderods and crossheads are painted white?

It was standard practice on the DM&IR, though the rod ends were sometimes painted black.  This was true right up to the end of steam.

The Lake Superior Railroad Museum is a first rate museum. Lots of rare stuff to see.  Don't miss DM&IR 2-8-8-4 #227.  As pristine a locomotive as you will find, it has been literally outside only a handfull of days since the end of steam. It's drivers are mounted just off the rails and turn every half hour. So in that sense it "runs",  But by doing that, the lubrication system etc is being used, and it looks suprisingly "in service" becasue of it.

Wow! Didn't know there was any DM&IR steam still in operation. Great to see.
