Patience Required. Lots of It. And Bug Spray Too.
Author: TexBob

Sometimes the wait for a target train is 5 minutes, other times it's hours. It was the latter last night for me waiting for
UP Baytown branch local LHO39B local to cross the classic MP design bridge over Hunting Bayou in Jacinto City, TX.

I arrived there about 2300 to await it. Fortunately a few other trains went by me, but UP 1996 didn't make it there until 0254.
I passed the time conducting an experiment to gauge how long Off insect repellent is effective in a high humidity environment.
The answer is about 2 hours, at which point I was attacked by sparrow-sized mosquitoes.

TexBob— true artists “suffer for their art” and being “eaten alive“ by mosquitoes is true suffering, indeed!
My dad and I “Off” foam for years—can you still get that? It was like shaving cream and lathered on.
Great photo, as always !

Splendid!
Having seen photos of the lighting set ups of O. Winston Link, I fell compelled to ask:
What was the lighting apparatus employed here?
TIA!

My kit is pretty simple compared to Mr. Link's set ups.
I used 5 radio-controlled speedlites on 9' light stands.
The flashes are triggered by radio transmitter on the camera.

Excellent result and definitely worth the effort. (My family and friends often wonder why I'm heading out to backpack in the mountains 30 miles from the nearest road, often waking up in the middle of the night to photograph the Milky Way over the Sierra, etc., but then they see the results and the questions stop.)

I too was wondering what it takes to light a subject this size, and I appreciate you sharing your setup. I've recently put together a portable studio lighting kit for doing shoots of friends and family, my cycling club, etc., and I was wondering what I could achieve with 3x 200 Ws strobes plus a Nikon speedlight using radio triggers.

As mentioned, does the crew get spooked, or do you provide some type of advanced warning that you'll be using flash photography?

Thanks and best,
Sean

Insect repellent.

Find an Army-Navy store.

Buy a small olive drab tube of milspec repellent.

Put one spot one each cheek and one on the back of each hand.

Rub them in.

Wash your face and hands off with soap and water before bed.
