Heading to Work on the D&S
Author: LJGross

While thankfully the D&S has been able to work out a way to continue to operate through the pandemic, the revised Rockwood to Cascade operating plan means that we only occasionally hear the sound of a steam whistle down in the valley. The one train you can count on is the 493 and at least a portion of the train running into town on Saturday evening after the last train and then returning to Rockwood first thing on Tuesday morning to position things for the week's schedule. This morning in Durango was like most have been recently - crisp, clear and dry. Autumn has faded in the high country but the leaves are still bright down here in the valley. K37 493, which has been performing yeoman's duty all summer, looked and sounded great as she hoisted a full 14 cars up the 2.5% grade of Hermosa Hill unassisted and under a clear stack.

The first two shots were taken at Pinkerton Siding. Note the Halloween decoration on the nose of the speeder in the siding.

3) About to duck under the U.S. 550 overpass
4) Splitting the crossbucks at Shalona Crossing

Thanks for looking!

Interesting that the cars with the "new" D&S scheme are together.  Didn't see them bunched up like that this summer.

Hard to get used to the idea of a clean boiler jacket.  Sooted jackets were the norm when burning coal.
