CN, Engineers Reach Tentative Contract Averting StrikeCN and Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) today reached an agreement in principle on a new labour contract for the companies locomotive engineers in Canada. As a result of the agreement the TCRC has cancelled its plan to strike CN at midnight tonight, and it will be busness as usual tomorrow for CN's freight operations and for commuter agencies in Toronto and Montreal that use CN locomotive engineers to operate their trains. The wording of the proposed five-year agreement, retorative to Jan. 01,2005, is being worked out. Details of the contract are being withheld pending ratification by the TCRC's membership. The TCRC has roughly 1,600 active employees at CN with 1,490 in freight service. E. Hunter Harrison, President and executive officer of CN said " I am pleased that CN and the TCRC were able to resolve outstanding issues and reach a new collective agreement without labour disruption. This allows all of us at CN to remain focused on our customers and their transportation needs." Negotiation of the new agreement in principle was assisted by the involvement of two mediators appointed by Federal Minister of Labour and Housing Joe Fontana.
