At a little after 1:30PM today (4-7-08), legendary Colorado photographer and historian Richard H. Kindig passed away peacefully at Lutheran Exempla Hospice in Wheatridge, CO. He was 92 years of age. Rich had been unable to walk for over five years, and recently developed several other substantial health problems. He entered a nursing home in early January, living there for about three months. He was only in the hospice for a little over a day. At his request, there will be no services. He will be interred at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Englewood, CO. He is survived by his sister Norma Holder, her husband Bert, and a group of nieces and nephews. He was preceeded in death by his parents and a brother.

Sad day indeed. Richard was a true treasure, and his knowledge of Colorado and the west was second to none.

He was one of the pioneers. The people who went out and took photos, met the veteran railroaders, rode the trains, and wrote about it. Fifty and sixty years ago.

RIP.

A sad day for all of us that appreciate railroad history.

This image is from his tribute day at the Colorado Railroad Museum, 1 March 2008. By proclamation of Colorado's governor, that day was declared as Richard H. Kindig Day. I am glad that he got to attend, and that I had the chance to chat with him a few times.

Old Bob down in Lost Wages

He was a wonderful person to talk to. Met him only once when 844 was in town in Denver at 36th ST yard where the locomotives tie up and that was where 844 was overnighting.

Hee is one of my favorite Richard Kindig photos. It actually is a self-portrait made by Richard himself with C&S #58 at Solitude, CO in 1938.
He truely was a legend for his photography and will be missed greatly by all of us.
