Author: CimaScrambler I took these a couple of weeks ago when the snow was on the ground on Cajon Pass - been to busy to get them worked up for presentation until this morning. But here they are at last. It was a beautiful time to be up on the hill. I didn't get there until the clouds were parting at the end of the storm, and then stayed overnight in the motel at Cajon Jct and was out at dawn the next morning. Hopefully I'll find time to work up a few more in the next day or so.
Enjoy! - Kit Kit Courter Menefee, CA LunarLight Photography Date: 01/19/11 08:55 Re: White Stuff on Cajon (better late than never) . . . I'm hoping maybe to get out there for some snow next year and wonder if I should rent a 4x4 SUV or if a standard car will work. Date: 01/19/11 09:14 Re: White Stuff on Cajon (better late than never) . . . Author: 3rdswitch Nice Kit, you don't post often enough.

That depends on how much snow is on the ground and the time of day. A couple of inches on the ground and you could get just about anywhere except Davis Ranch with a passenger car, just like when the ground is dry. The road over to Davis Ranch crosses a wash on the way and the snow made the sand very soft. More than a couple of inches, or if there are drifts anywhere, you have to be more careful. In the evening, when the partly melted snow starts to freeze, there can get to be ice just about anywhere, and that is definitely a time to be careful. Also, the rain in December has brought some deep ruts and a couple of places where gulleys have eroded close to the wheel marks on some of the dirt roads crossing fills. You don't want to put a tire in one of those, and they can get masked by snow. Go slowly, keep your eyes open, and take your long-handled flat shovel for "in case". - Kit Kit Courter Menefee, CA LunarLight Photography Date: 01/19/11 15:46 Re: White Stuff on Cajon (better late than never) . . . Author: Super_C Best shots of the snow on Cajon that I've seen. It all has to do with the light, and you done good my boy, you done good (that is how the compliments are phrased in these parts, Kit)!

Author: md BTW, it's been a few years since I have been at Cajon, but was there during the construction a few years back. Did they ever restore the old road that came in below the summit that was partly paved and I think had that white fence in front of it coming off the main road? I thought during construction they covered it over for the trucks and were supposed to bring it back to the old pavement remnants. Is that true or not?

If you are referring to the road along the power line that runs up to the crossing at the south track, underpass for the north tracks, and a crossing of the UP track, it was covered over with dirt and packed hard by the earthmoving trucks. It is still in pretty good shape - much better than it was when the pavement was there but full of deep chuckholes. As for the white fence, the only one I can think of is at the road up to Hill 582 which is west of the power line road a ways. That road has a couple of gulleys across it where it crosses the gas pipe line access road. You can get around the gulleys alright but a shovel to fill in the gulleys would be nice to have.
