'Miles' of train at Onaga, KS
Author: santafe199

Yesterday I posted a thread showing a very long train ("UP 5501 at first light") which was ID'd as an M-NPKC. I assume that means North Platte-Kansas City,
which further leads me to think this train is a shuttle for overflow traffic out of Bailey yard. It had a DP unit cut in about 30 cars from the rear end.
It took so long going by me I almost had time to run out and get a pizza... ;^) It got to digging, and sure enough I tangled with another one of these long
behemoths back in May of 2011 at Onaga, KS. Here are those shots from the Kansas hwy 16 overpass:

1. & 2. UP 8408 leading in a couple of telephoto angles.

3. UP 8623 cut in really deep in the train.
(all photos taken May 29, 2011)

Thanks for looking!

Oh man... I ran out of fingers & toes REALLY early! I'd guess the train was close to 10,000 feet long, if that helps.

And thank you for the Thanksgiving sentiment & the very same to you & all the rest of the TO gang!

Think back to the Deramus years with the KCS running 200 car freights. The MNPKC runs close to that number. Typically around 120-130 cars. The train can sometimes have a second section.

It looks better with the Challenger leading the train. I have several at that location somewhere in my collection of photos

That train is a regular in the mornings. If you are out east of Grantville it seems as if it goes from horizon to horizon.

Interesting train shots and report, but I also like that set of farm buildings in the 2d and 3d images.

I saw a 200 car gondola train during the first weeks of the Conrail breakup. It was long.
