Western Railroad Discussion > Washouts on Moffat Tunnel Sub

Just heard over the radio there's a washout about 500 ft long just west of Tunnel 2 (just west of Plain) - "roadbed gone" per the MOW crew. There are probably more deep in the tunnel district; there's also one right at the road crossing at Plain. The MOW crews are slowly working their way west from Plain, discovering the extent of the damage as they go. Will update if I hear more...

As far as I know, yes. And I believe there are two stuck up there (the derailed one near Cliff and one between Plain and Crescent), but I really don't know for sure.

UP is advising customers train will not begin moving until Sunday at earliest. Manifest train from Phippsburg is held there with a departure we're told not until 6 or 7 pm sunday night at best.

Nasty for everyone affected.

The slow speed situation up through Tennessee Pass wouldn't even be a problem. Still faster than waiting two days haha.

Train was rescued yesterday, Rocks and trees blocking both directions and with he highway closed with multiple washouts they could not get to them. They were on duty 37 hours when they were brought back into Denver. The train should be in Grand Junction by now.

This train was stopped around MP27 in the tunnel district when a train in front of it was hit by a rockslide that derailed a couple of cars. That train was rescued and then they had to dig out the second train behind it at MP27.

Colorado Highway 72 extensively damaged by Coal Creek flooding 8 to 12-inches of rain in the surrounding area! Water was still flowing over damaged Highway 72 about a mile west of Union Pacific's Coal Creek Canyon overpass September 13, 2013 - still raining! Highway just one of numerous roads closed by record setting rainfall in September (normally a dry month).

I just went over that on Amtrak a month ago... Check-Mate and TSOL for days if UP is going to replace the culvert and do it right.

Take a lot more than two days to open the Tennessee Pass line, given all of the signals that have been removed, crossing safety gates that have been removed, trees growing between the rails at several spots south of Leadville, ...
