UP 4014 move
Author: bearease

Haven't heard anything recently about the 4014 move. Is that coming up pretty soon?

I greatly worry that we will only get 7 DAYS notice (Only - 1 Week) for this mega--mega Historic move.
We only got about 2 weeks schedule notice for the 2011 Arizona Centennial special with the UP 844.
I am praying very hard that the mega--mega historic UP 4014 Big Boy move gets far more advance notice than that trip in 2011. A LOT of folks have been waiting many--Many Decades for any UP Big Boy Move- Cold or Hot - ya know.
Union Pacific Railroad Please--please--please keep us well informed about this very very important move.

I wouldn't worry too much right now. I'd love to catch the ferry move from Pomona to West Colton to Cheyenne, but the bigger event for me is when the 4014 is under steam and leading. I'm confident UP will make sure THAT is publicized to the max, so even if the snarky members here say that this is not done for the railfan's benefit, we WILL benefit... right?

In a small chance that 4014 is a no go, there should be the 3985 as Plan B.

Yes, well the LIVE Steam move of UP 4014 will not be for another long 4 years or so--sadly.

I think we should NOT open that can of worms - if ya know what I mean.
That horse has already been kicked as far as it can !!.

The exit from the Fairgrounds is probably going to happen in the middle of the night some upcoming Saturday-Sunday in October. Most fans likely don't have access to the fairground property, and there's very little legal street parking around that part of Pomona - so I'm not sure what there will be to see - other than perhaps pacing the train in the darkness on the Metrolink line on the trip to West Colton.

Whenever, however she moves, you bet a greater number of folks than usual will be out to watch...railfans or normal people. We all gotta remember to keep our eyes on the road and look out for the other guy. Be careful out there.

Likely 4014 moves are daytime under 25 mph.

I just bought my 4014 Rail Giants Big Boy raffle tickets yesterday and was told to expect the big move sometime in November. As always, the devil is in the details.

I know they have to lay tracks to get 4014 out of there, but which way do they go? I'm guessing north across the parking lot.

First , the 2 Steam Locomotives behind the 4014 have to be moved out of the way, the UP Steam Crew Has been working on getting those ready to be moved.

Since the 4014 sits on tracks running East--West, even after the Big Boy Backs out , the Panel Track with the 4014 has to be turned towards the Northwest and The Metro Link Track, once it is on Real Track, it's West and South , down to Basset, then out to West Colton

They could also take the 4014 to the Pasadena Sub switch at Cambridge in Claremont upon freedom from the fairgrounds, and then stash it by the old Santa Fe Pomona station until ready for the move east or west. Nothing runs on these tracks on between Friday afternoon and late morning Monday, so the BNSF local would not be blocked.

An eastward move would depend on if the 4014 can negotiate the sharp right turn at the diamond (or what's left of it) in Colton to get to WC.

Lets see how many different posts we all can start asking if the UP 4014 Big Boy has moved or if there is any new news.

Just why do you feel that Union Pacific owes you an oppertunity to photograph their private property?

If that curve is a problem, they could run a little further south, then back up onto the Mt. Vernon Connector in the southeast quadrant, onto UP, then west to West Colton Yard.

Sounds more like a plea to the UP, not a demand or any insinuation that UP owes any of us anything. Not sure why anyone finds that offensive.

I am sure UP is aware of the historic nature of the move and will keep the community informed.
