Weird Car Wednesday

Saw these MBKX cars in Woodford siding last weekend! Haven't seen these type of cars before, there were about 15 of these NB on a BNSF train.

My guess is to carry 2 large heavy coils of steel and since it appears they are insulated I would guess cold rolled.

Why would they use a flammable lining?

I do wonder how they expect the worker to get a hook under the coil cover center bracket? Most coil cars have walkways on the sides.

No worker needed, done by overhead crane.

Cold roll or what you could call finished surface steel is loaded on car equipped with a trough lined with wood or a composite material that could be flammable. Hot roll steel is steel that will be run through further processing to finish the surface. Those coils may still be hot when they are loaded and it doesn't matter if they get some dings from contacting a steel lined trough as they will be reprocessed at a finishing mill.

Because it's light and thermally efficient?

All hot roll does not get further processed. Vessel bodies, trash truck bodies, trash containers, intermodel containers and lots of other stuff is made with hot rolled sheet as is.

Cold rolled can go through further processing as well. Electro-Galvinized and paint coating are the most common additional processing done.

Foam insulated, Foam burns quite well
