New storm on the way to Donner Pass
Author: WoodrowStool

12"-24" forecast for the Donner Pass the next 36 hours.  Two power units and a flanger just left Truckee for a trip up the hill at 8:30p local time Tuesday night.

Boiling Man - charge up the photo gear, you're on. :-)

I'll be snowshoeing around Troy Saturday, hopefully it'll be busy!

Went up to Summit today, only saw 1 westbound freight, a flanger and Amtrak.

Train traffic on Donner is way down. From my visit in late December. Dead before and after #6 for hours and only two trains from dusk to dawn.

So is it running via FRC or is traffic that far down on the UP?

Remember when Caltrans wanted to extend Capitol Corridor trains to Reno, but the UP didn't want passenger trains interfering with all their freight traffic?

Drove over Donner to Reno yesterday. It was plenty cold (23°F) and already snowing a bit before noon. Didn't see a single train going either direction. Drove to Quincy last night where I overnighted, then came down the canyon this morning. No trains except one BNSF PASFRS coming out of Keddie. There is supposedly a big storm coming tonight or tomorrow that will dump quite a bit into even the lower elevations. The Quincy locals are bracing for 10 to 12 inches and they are only at 3,300 feet. We'll see.

Traffic seems kind of uneven- some days are fairly busy- other days belong to the Zephyr.  I've only been up here about a week and so far haven't detected a pattern yet.

I won't be out covering this one-  we're over in South Lake Tahoe picking up 2 unused nights on a time-share overlooking Nevada-  nice view!  Snow will only make it better...
