Talgo Coast Scrap-light
Author: jmf1910

Running the route of the Amtrak Coast Starlight, I caught the Talgo "Scrap-Light" at two spots in San Jose, CA, this morning on UP's Coast Subdivision. It was a beautiful first day of March with a good number of railfans (nice chatting with fellow TO'ers "JimB" and "mleland") out to catch this move from Seattle to the scrapper in Anaheim.

1) Rolling through the Alviso marshlands at the northern end of San Jose.
2) Approaching Coyote at the southern end of San Jose (while it may be the 10th most populous city in the U.S., San Jose is mostly one giant sprawling suburb of 1M+ people).
3) Passing the massive Metcalf Energy Center at Coyote.

Thanks for looking!

Is that normal to change the power in Oakland on this type of train. Or maybe it was done in Seattle. 204 was on head end up there in another picture.

The engines were changed out before leaving Seattle.

Nice shots, Jon! But I think the title takes the cake :) That ballast pile sure is a nice way to elevate a shot at Coyote. I hope there are some shots from the crossing with you in them haha

Visually, I'm not sad to see those Pokémon ears go to the scrapper.  But I did ride them a couple of times out of Portland, and the ride quality was quite good.

I like your wider angle at Alviso and slightly elevated angle at Coyote. Always interesting to see how others do it! Good to see you out there and get a chance to chat while they doddled in San Jose. After Coyote I beat it to Aromas by about 5 minutes and may have had to push the speed limit a bit for that (although these days everybody else is too).

Nicely zoomed shot of the Talgos there.
