Catching the UP at the Kate Shelley High Bridge
Author: Mid_Iowa_Rails

On Saturday, May 1st, I went up to the Kate Shelley High Bridge between Boone and Ogden, Iowa.

1) First up was this UP rail inspection vehicle.
2) Not long after came this short EB Z train.
3) Next was a WB manifest.

4) On that manifest was this hat trick of SP boxcars.
5) WB coal empties with one unit at each end.
6) WB manifest

7) Pink TTX boxcar
8) EB coal loads
9) After that coal train, I decided to pack up and head home. Right as I was leaving, another EB coal train came by and ended up stopping. I noticed the DPU parked where it was easily visible from the nearby J Ave overpass and grabbed this shot. Saved the best for last, I guess you could say.

Thanks for looking!

I like the DP shot best of all.  Shame you can't see the bridge well at all from open access points.

Not many pictures of the Kate Shelley Bridge

Certainly would be useful to have a drone, but even then the bridges are quite close. The west approach is an interesting spot and you did well there.

Is the old bridge being used for MOW vehicles?

The old bridge is blocked off completely on each end the last time I looked. The U.P. wanted to remove the bridge after building the new one but it had put on the registry of historical places prior to building the new one.

Was the new bridge built (in part) with pieces of the former MILW bridge to the south?

The girders from the old MILW bridge, now part of the High Trestle Trail, were used in building the new bridge.
