BNSF track inspection train on the OE (P&W)
Author: VicNeves

BNSF operated a track inspection train between Portland and Eugene. Got onto the OE at Salem. Here it's going through Albany Oregon this morning.

Great locomotive to use for special trains!

GP40X is a cool locomotive for this short inspection train. I will assume BNSF has trackage rights on UP between Portland and Eugene, Oregon, no? Normally wouldn't Union Pacific perform track inspections vs Burlington Northern Santa Fe?

But BNSF seems to be. I guess the price was right!

This is on the BNSF Oregon Electric line to Eugene, not UP. BNSF does not have rights on the UP except between Portland and Salem to access the OE. BNSF leased the OE to Portland & Western in the early 2000s, but they have the right to inspect the track on occasion.

Your videos are super well done rarities.  Either should make VOTD!
Thanks for your excellent and unusual video posting.

"MutIlating" it may have saved it from scrap.

There was a P&W crew running the locomotive.

Wish it would have good power like that when I get called to run it…
Always get stuck with a MAC or Dash 9 when I run the Geo, makes for a long trip especially in the hills!
(Slow loading engines on a train like that means you’re gonna constantly be speeding up on the down hill and slowing down on the up hill while you’re waiting for the engine to actually start loading. Also making the test car staff unhappy since you’re having to set the air constantly to keep from speeding. The geo car people complain when you use the air brakes, it’s even listed in the briefing they give the head end crew. )
