Western Railroad Discussion > Western trip day one.

My friend Russ and I flew into Amarillo last night to begin our annual western trip; had planned on spending today around Hereford TX but with the derailment making prospects on eastbounds slim, we changed plans and headed north to the Golden State route to try our luck with Samson of the Cimarron and were not disappointed.

1-3.  Shortly after arrival we got a good eastbound stack train and as usual Russ had the drone along for aerial views.

4.  We got ahead of the eastbound for another view east of Kismet KS

5-6.  A westbound was cleared up at Kismet for that EB and we got back down to the bridge for shots of it going west.

Really nice, and, good weather. Unlike my trip so far.

7.  We knew another westbound was out there a ways so we headed east to intercept it, shown here in a cut west of Mineola KS.

8.  Westbound at Plains KS.

9.  Another meet at Kismet; eastbound is cleared up on the siding for that westbound.  It was a slow rolling meet and I wasn't able to get the timing right for a good meet shot.

10.  Being a lifelong RI fan I wanted a shot at Liberal.  We headed back south after this.

11.  And landed in Canadian TX for a few on the Canadian River bridge(s) to finish the day.  Westbound on 1.

12.  Russ got a good aerial of this rail train on 1 that I was out of position for.

13.  Grab shot, this eastbound on 2 snuck up on us.

14-15.  Westbound on 1.

16-17.  Good finish to a day of high quality if not volume!

Excellent bunch at some cool locations, great way to start your railfan trip! As much as I've 'fanned up and down the western ends of the Transcon and GSR, I've always told myself to head east some time like you did, and these nice shots remind me why I should, thanks for posting...

Excellent Andy!  I have yet to check that bridge off my railfan bucket list.

Extraordinary set of images !  Four stars. 

Very nice series around the Mighty Sampson. The Kismet cut offers another excellent place to shoot. As does the Liberal area.

Great group of photos.  I'm guessing that the bridge the train is on at Canadian is a lot newer than the one next to it?
