Western Railroad Discussion > Loving the KCS power!Date: 05/20/23 11:55 Loving the KCS power! Author: rrartist With the now-approved CP - KCS acquisition, the power has started to mixed together as the KCS 3967 leading a Ballast empty yesterday in Bangor WI and this morning with the KCS 4133 leading CP 248 into La Crosse WI.

Author: engineerinvirginia I guess power starts to mix gently as movements that used to be interchange become runthoughs with power intact...eventually the rosters get fully merged and power bureaus can select from everything available.
Date: 05/20/23 11:58 Re: Loving the KCS power! Author: rrartist Here's another look at the KCS 4133 just after sunrise in La Crosse WI. KCS 4811 leads CP 645 past Dakota MN also this morning while yesterday the UP 2713 and friends led a CP 644 into La Crosse WI.

Date: 05/20/23 14:13 Re: Loving the KCS power! Author: Roadmaster Watching the Iowa cams along the Ottumwa Sub to monitor I180/181 trains, I've noticed that CP power is in the minority on trains between Muscatine and Ottumwa. On the CPKC Rosenberg Sub, KCS power makes up the majority of locomotives, as best as I can tell. Is anyone aware of CP reactivating units KCS had put in storage?

:^) Date: 05/21/23 12:15 Re: Loving the KCS power! Author: ntharalson Good stuff, Jim, thanks for posting. Those first two shots at Hesselberg(sp) Road east of Bangor are somewhat surprising, given KCS' disdain for their early MAC's, and a BNSF unit second. Great catch.

Author: pbouzide Caught a St Paul bound 4x0 manifest along US-61 just south of Red Wing this past Wednesday afternoon driving back to Chicago (we usually take the WI-35 side of the river). 3 of the 4 units were KCS Belles with a red CP third out.
Since you're from that area rrartist, can you confirm my impression that UP (ex-CNW) actually does more business in Winona than CP does? I think I now understand why UP runs this (mostly trackage rights) operation, though I don't know how often. UP had a SD-40 and a Geep laying over amidst the riverside elevators and mills there. I am from a bit further north than Jim but, in Winona proper UP has more business than CPKC. The two locomotives that you saw are the power switching industries at Winona. Date: 05/26/23 11:59 Re: Loving the KCS power! Author: NSDTK Can KCS power run in the lead in Canada ? Since it doesnt have hot plates and streachers ? Activating KCS power would have USA qualified power in place to allow Canadian qualified power to return north for use.

I don't think KCS power can lead in Canada, so I agree with you that is why we see KCS power showing up on trains south of St. Paul. I also have seen only one ex-BNSF locomotive on the CP and that was trailing. I know that KCS setup two into MOW service painted yellow. I wonder if many are being used to repay horsepower hours on other railroads. |
