Rough day on the UP
Author: kevinkuehl

I was out taking some pictures in West Chicago this morning and heard that the UP was having a rough day. Track two was out of service between MP 48 and MP 37 due to a broken rail. As if that was not bad enough, track one was blocked by a westbound that got tripped up by the hotbox detector.

Anyway, I was only able to get three decent pictures. One is C&NW 8701, an unpatched C44-9W and another is UP 6000 C44ACCTE. Both were trailing units of westbounds so they are not too bad.

ANYONE KNOW WHY THE NUMBER PLATE LATES ON THE 8701 WERE TAPED OVER?

If this is the engine I think it it, they have been taped over for a while. As a matter of fact, I think it's Duct tape that might be there because the number boards are missing all together.

Track two between Mp 44 and MP 37 was out of service because a car on an eastbound train had derailed and re-railed several times earlier that morning. I was the engineer on the train that was hit by the 46 Detector, and found the damage to track two. It Surprised me that the train that had derailed and re-railed it's self, didn't do more damage, or come completely off the tracks creating a much bigger problem. UP got lucky yesterday morning.

Were you on the westbound with three C44ACCTEs at the point (UP 6020 west I think)? I never heard on the radio which train hit it but my count pointed to that one. Once you guys got nailed, I was pretty sure my morning was done.

I was the nut in West Chicago in the red Dodge just east of the EJ&E. :-)
