On Saturday, November 20, BNSF, UP and Amtrak put a record number of trains (by BNSF's count) over Cajon Pass - 118. That was 89 BNSF and 26 UP freights and 3 Amtrak movements. Not counted: an unusually high number of helper movements (16). This eclipsed a record of 111 trains set four days earlier.

Triple tracking of Cajon at least as far east as Summit you can consider a done deal - target date for completion is 2006, and permitting for the mountain segment is in progress.

That would have to be a *really* late Desert Wind...

But what about its budgeting? And is this simply double tracking the north track from Verdemont to Summit or are there any variances? It seems a bit tight in Sullivan's curve to hug that north track. Any timeline yet for a third main between Lugo and East Victorville? I wonder if the Mojave Narrows would get included. Hesperia's getting an overdue third grade separation, an underpass down by the airport at Ranchero Road.

This means Daggett to Barstow had to have nearly 140-150 trains on just two tracks! Wow! I have to admit the BNSF is pushing the limits of a two main track rail line with only a slight problem so far.
