Western Railroad Discussion > QUESTION in regards to the UP 5131Date: 11/23/04 21:41 QUESTION in regards to the UP 5131 Author: uprail Yesterday during the snow lashing that I received, I happened to notice the "square nose" on this unit. What significant operating characteristics does this unit have compared to a conventional SD 70M from the hogger perspective?

"The current batches of SD70Ms are all coming with the cab that has the slanted nose sides and raised center nose section (visible at http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=83319). This group is numbered 5127-5231. These all have a control stand rather than desktop controls and are equipped with "mini-FIRE" electronics -- the EMD FIRE system with one screen for the engineer's use combined with analog gauges. Regular FIRE would have two screens and no analog gauges." Except of course on the retro-reflective emblem and striping where it's very noticable.
