What will the likely routing be from Denver-the Twin Cities? Take the KP to Kansas City, then hop on the ex-CNW up north?

Probably not since the 3985 is going and the 844 is not. They will take the 3985 across Nebraska and then up to Minneapolis. The KP is way too slow track speed to get there in time. Lots of 40 mile an hour track out there.

The cars have to get from Denver to St. Paul somehow as well which means a diesel powered passenger train? Hmm. Or will 844 pull the pax cars back to Cheyenne before 3985 hauls them to St. Paul? Questions, questions...

If the dates simply refer to the times the trains will be away from Cheyenne, then the 844 would leave on the 20th and return on the 28th. Then the next day, 3985 would take off on the 29th with the cars brought up from Denver on the previous day. No diesels needed!

Will this move go though Des Moines then north?

Could go up former CNW/CMO via Sioux City and Mankato to Minneapolis?

My understanding is that only the steam-related cars (tool car, crew car, etc.) are going. No excursions planned for either Democratic convention in Denver or Republicans in Minneapolis.

No excursions planned but the original rumor was that all 30 cars from the UP excursion fleet would be on display for both the DNC and RNC. This was never confirmed though so maybe it was false all along. I guess we'll know in August.

I believe they've got some pretty heavy use planned for the cars while at the DNC and RNC. They're not going to run train movements, but they'll host lots and lots of parties and meetings.

3985 is too heavy to use the Omaha route through Mankato, it will likely go to Nevada, Ia and then north on the Rock Island.
