UP 2-8-2 1924 at Ogden, Beyond Photoshop

Here's kind of a heartbreaking negative, with a tear that has proven to be beyond my skills with Photoshop. I can almost hide it, but even in the fixed version (deleted), you can still that there's something there.

UP 2-8-2 no. 1924, at Ogden, Utah, September 29, 1957, photo by Vic Oberhansley.

Very cool photo anyway.

I agree. The tear doesn't really detract, actually.

The tear line in the foreground is pretty easy to fix but the valve gear area would require blowing it up so you can do a pixel by pixel repair and that would take some time.
Even so, as others have said, this is a nice picture.

Here is a really quick attempt... like Panamerican said, in order to really get the crosshead looking right, you'd have to do it pixel at a time. It's a great photo, and thanks for sharing.

Beautiful image of a beautiful engine, too bad we don't have any of them preserved as far as I know; simplicity is beautiful and it says "Union Pacific" all the way.

Thanks for sharing!

Great job of photoshopping for a grand old workhorse. Thanks Don for posting this to start with. These were the early workhorses of the mainlines, eventually relegated to branchs and yard switchers. Sort of like the SD40s of the steam days.

Damn good picture to me. Wish I owned it. You are lucky. Do you have any more?

For a railroad with lots of grades in the west I always wondered why a lot of their engines had small sand domes.

Orange Empire RR Museum in Perris, CA has UP 2564. Is this a different class of 2-8-2 than the one pictured?

Thanks,
Jim

Union Pacific MK-7 class 2-8-2 #2537 was built for the UP subsidiary "Oregon Short Line" by Alco in 1917. It was donated to the City of Walla Walla in 1959.

I believe that the #2005 in Pocatello is of the same class as the #1924. The only major difference: the #2005 burned coal.

According to Drury, 2005 is indeed a MK-1, as is 1924, built by Baldwin in 1911. 2564 is a MK-10, built by Brooks in 1921. He does not show 2537 at all on his list of UP locos.

Please tell me more about the resource you referred to as "Drury." Is it a book, or a list of locomotives?

Here is my second shot at fixing it in photoshop. The purple band proved a bit of a problem, but I was able to eliminate the crack.

Guide to North American Steam Locomotives, by George Drury. Kalbach publication. "History and development of steam power since 1900." Including railroad-by-railroad histories and rosters. A great reference book.

Agreed, a great photo. Thanks to Don for allowing us to share in it and thanks to those whose work magically repaired damage.

In many ways it's amazing 1924 still existed in late 1957, but so also did 2006 at Cheyenne, even running well into 1957 on the local to Yoder, WY.

Here are a couple of other variations on adjusting the color.

My heart just went "thump" on the second one. Wow!

Can you share your technique, since I'd love to apply it to the high-res scan.
