Logging Lokies Delivered With Other Logging Equipment!
Author: LoggerHogger

Unlike mainline railroads that usually took delivery of just a new locomotive at a time, loggers had a different challenge. Loggers often ordered a new locomotive only when the won a bid on new logging tracks which usually meant they needed numerous new items of logging equipment besides just a new locomotive. Such was the case with Deep River Logging in 1921.

In this view we see Deep River Logging take delivery of not only 2-truck Climax #8 but also a huge loader built by Washington Iron Works. The occasion was caused by the winning bid that Deep River had put on a large tract of new timber that required them to expand their logging railroad and associated equipment.

The delivery of such equipment fro Deep River Logging was made more difficult by the fact that DRL had no rail connection to the outside world. All equipment had to be barged up to the operation at Deep River Washington. Here a barge was loaded at Vancouver, Washington with the new loader and the new Climax for the trip down the Columbia River and up to Deep River.

Again, this was all just another day of highball steam logging.

Just curious, what happened to all of the Deep River Logging railroad equipment (and rail) when the company ceased operations? Was it economic to haul everything out of there?

That is a cool shot, Martin. I could see doing something like that on a layout someday. Never would have thought of it, so again, thanks for educating us on the more obscure and interesting aspects of early logging railroads!
