Viewing a 4014 move
Author: Spikes

Metrolink ties with UP near La Puente by Railroad Ave and E. Temple.
UP yards are at S. Azusa overpass and Valley.
The UP main passes Pomona Transit walk bridge by Main and First.
Ontario and Colton onward east. Daytime slow moves likely.
Any thoughts?

Would maybe use ex-SP (now UP Alhambra Sub) between City of Industry (nearest Valley Blvd) and Pomona - since this line sees far less traffic west of Pomona than the original UP (LA Sub) these days.

LA Sub is 2 Main Tracks between these points, but would require the engine to negotiate some sharp curves in the ex-SP Industry yard to get over to the LA Sub. My bet would be ex-SP all the way from Basset (La Puente) to West Colton.

Viewing areas would be the Grand Avenue overpass in Walnut/Diamond Bar area, and along Valley Blvd where it runs parallel for about a mile between Pomona Avenue and the 57 freeway (near Cal Poly Pomona). In Pomona proper, 1st Street runs parallel to both UP lines from Oak Street all the way to Montclair.

What does Miller/Coors have to do with this ? Thats a different line

I would gamble Metrolink to San Bernardino, BNSF to Daggett, and UP to Salt Lake and Cheyenne.

My guess is most likely the move on Metrolink territory would happen on a Sunday night after the last train, but only as far as the BNSF yard in Fontana where the locomotive would receive further prep work for a few days or even weeks in a more accessible location before making the big trek.

Why on earth would Union Pacific want to take UP owned 4014 to the BNSF yard in Fontana for additional work, when UP has its own shop and yard in West Colton?

I recall that Ed Dickens, steam program manager, has stated publicly the 4014 will be going to West Colton for further work when it leaves the fairgrounds and before the long run to Cheyenne.

Not trying to be disagreeable, but using another railroads shop facilities when they have their own in the area, does not make much sense.

To bad that published fact proves you wrong. It is public fact the planned route is Metrolink San Gabriel Sub Pomona to Bassett then switch to UP Alhambra sub reverse direction then to West Colton.

They could also take the 4014 to the Pasadena Sub switch at Cambridge in Claremont upon freedom from the fairgrounds, and then stash it by the old Santa Fe Pomona station for a few hours until ready for the daylight move west to Bassett. Nothing runs on these tracks between Friday afternoon and late morning Monday, so the BNSF local would not be blocked. This way they could take a little time to get all their brake rigging squared away. The distance between Cambridge and the fairground 'junction' would only be about 2 miles, and then another mile west to the Santa Fe depot.
