Steam & Excursion > Where Was The Most Scenic Turntable Location?Date: 12/19/13 06:11 Where Was The Most Scenic Turntable Location? Author: LoggerHogger More often than not, railroad facilities including roundhouses and their turntables were located in the heart of cities on the "wrong side of the tracks" and were not very scenic. However there were some roundhouses and their turntables that were located in beautiful settings.
Here is my vote for the most beautiful location of a turntable, The McCloud River RR in McCloud, California at the foot of Mt. Shastaas shown by this photo taken by Richard F. Thomas. What is your "most beautiful turntable location"? Martin Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 12/19/13 06:16 by LoggerHogger. Date: 12/19/13 06:39 Re: Where Was The Most Scenic Turntable Location? Author: CimaScrambler I don't have a photo of it so share, but I'm thinking the Silverton Railroad's Corkscrew Gulch turntable must rate pretty far up the list of scenic turntable locations.

Author: rswebber Either at the end of the Floresta branch, or even better, the one on the DSP&P outside of Elmo - pit still visible. I can think of no more scenic locale than a mile or so below Alpine Tunnel. Laws has a nice location, though the immediate area is less than scenic, the area beyond is beautiful. Also Hancock, and the table inside the enginehouse at Alpine.

St. Elmo - right near the TT location: http://www.vistaminingadventures.com/mary-murphy-mine.html Date: 12/19/13 07:03 Re: Where Was The Most Scenic Turntable Location? Author: tomstp Corkscrew: So instead of a switchback they used a turntable. Odd.

Corkscrew Gulch: It was a single switchback. If switchbacks are in pairs the train ends up going the same direction, but a single switchback reverses direction, so a TT was handy to keep the locomotive pointed forward. A decade ago I hiked to it from Red Mountain, a delightful walk in the woods many decades after reading about it in Beebe & Clegg's NARROW GAUGE IN THE ROCKIES. It's like you're at the top of the World.
