Steam & Excursion > Perhaps The Only Engine That You Get The Glare From Both Crewman!Date: 06/19/16 03:23 Perhaps The Only Engine That You Get The Glare From Both Crewman! Author: LoggerHogger While taking actions photos of steam locomotives back in the age of steam, it was not unusual for the camera wielding railfan to catch the glare from the crewman sitting at the controls of the side of the engine he was shoot from. However, with Cab-Forwards you could catch a double glare from the 2-man crew.
The year is 1938 and the location is near San Fernando, California. Southern Pacific #4113 heads a long cut of reefer cars down the San Fernando Valley in Southern California at track speed. Our un-named railfan photographer has beautifully captured the flat-faced AC-5 at speed with her revenue train under good control. It was probably not until our intrepid photographer got his film back from processing that he realized that he had captured the attention and the glare from both of the crew in the cab of #4113. Such was the nature of the good visibility of the Cab-Forwards. Martin Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 06/19/16 03:31 by LoggerHogger. Andy Date: 06/19/16 06:19 Re: Perhaps The Only Engine That You Get The Glare From Both Crew Author: PlyWoody Just the thought of the heat they endured give me fright. Did they use the cab forward east of LA down into the desert through Indigo where it was often 100 +?
As late as this locomotive was built, the air hoses are on the straight air side of the coupler. Why are there two air hoses, is one for train signal line on passenger trains? San Fernando road is on the left as you face north. Or the train is going up the line from San Fernando, but the locomotive would be working harder. I like the rider on the refer a few cars back.

Thankfully, I grew up with friendly engine crews in my neck of the woods: Sierra RR, Pickering RR and Westside. I never caught a glare and most of the time there was a smile and a wave. I fact, when I got older the Pickering yard crew (Bill Scott and Slim Murray) would let me switch around the yards and box factory in their new diesels. Now for a 15 year old kid, that's friendly! Maybe those SP crews in the valley were just mad because they had to drag freight up and down those flatlands instead of Donner Pass! John Date: 06/19/16 09:11 Re: Perhaps The Only Engine That You Get The Glare From Both Crew Author: ExSPCondr Well lets see here:
1. The second hose IS for communicating signal on passenger trains. 2. NO the slide is not reversed, the numbers all read in the right direction. 3. The rider is the swing brakeman. Although in the 100+ degree weather you mention that may not be any better. Posted from iPhone Date: 06/19/16 10:14 Re: Perhaps The Only Engine That You Get The Glare From Both Crew Author: callum_out Worse than "100 degrees through Indigo (sic!!)", they were used heavily as the San Timeteo Canyon
(Beaumont Hill) helpers in later years. Not so bad on the point but shoving a heavy train at 10 mph on a 100 degree day might be a bit taxing! I don't ever remeber that pole line on the far right side of the picture being on SF road. 70+ year native. Without that pole line it would fit in the Pacoima area. Also, it appears to be smoke from a helper way back in the shot.

If you stare long enough on the left side of the pic, you can barely make out the signal lines. The signal lines were on the east side of the tracks. The first set of poles on the right have 3 wires.
