Reading & Northern 425 Port Clinton to Jim Thorpe Solo Fall Trip
Author: Mgoldman

2016

Yes, OK, I am way behind in my editing, but I think you'll enjoy
the show. I've been searching far and wide for this year's R&N
Fall Foliage excursion photos - heck, any of this September and
October's images, though as I understand it, the weather was not
very cooperative. 2016, on the other hand was fantastic - and I
only just now came to that realization having just recently taken
a look at what I had captured - quite a bounty, too!

R&N No 425 was running solo and was then in her relatively new and
darker paint - along with some great weather and colors and, well...
here are a few thousand words, enjoy!

Photos from 10-16-2017

Departing Port Clinton, PA at the railroad's headquarters - most
trips as I understand now start further south in north Reading
and make a stop at Port Clinton

Second shot - by the "reflection pond" at New Ringgold, PA

Backlit, but it worked - at East Mahanoy Junction
(We have Sun!)

Reading & Northern engineer, Chris Bost, leans out for a view offering
the classic pose at Nesquehoning along the former CNJ Valley Branch.

Ruffling the leaves on a crisp Autumn day in October, R&N's 4-6-2 Pacific
emerges from the portal of a short tunnel on the ex-CNJ Nesquehoning Valley
Branch under Hunter Street. Gotta love the, what do they call them? "God
rays" or is it "Angel rays"?

A silhouette featuring Reading & Northern's 4-6-2 Pacific leading the Fall
foliage excursion over the famed Hometown Trestle. The trestle was built in
1931 and stands 161 feet tall, former CNJ bridge. Note the full length dome
car at the rear of the train and the much welcomed plume!

Back at New Ringgold, PA - in fact, just on the other side of the
pond

The obligatory pan - at 1/30th - Molino just shy of Port Clinton

Bonus "zoom" pan - 1/6th, at Nesquehoning... I got the nose sharp,
anyway

I asked a good friend: "Do I still got it" if what I got, I got last
year, lol?

Hope you enjoyed!

More "bonus" content, lol:

A visit to the shop - escorted, back in August of 2016:

Reading 4-8-4 No. 2102 under restoration to operation in
the expanded roundhouse

I think these are called "Diesels" - they were in the
engine shop across from the office (taken with permission)

And last - 4-6-0, former CP 1098 which last ran at Jim
Thorpe before being acquired by the R&N - then just painted
blue for display at the new "Reading Outer Bank" station as
the two-and-a-quarter - aka; R&N 225

"A+" images. My favorite is the reflection in the pond.

Great stuff Mitch! Even the Fall colors were a lot better last year. Almost no color this year.

I like the Detroit Diesel 6-110 RDC engine package in front of the 2102!

Two of my favorites, the Reading 2102 and RDCs!

Well done Mitch! I do like the pond location at New Ringold. I am also behind a bot in editing, but I saw the 425 pull a Fall Foliage train on October 15th and like others have said, not much color yet in the lower Lehigh Gorge.

At least you had some color up them tharr hills.... we're still starved of it here in the Philly metro area....mostly green and brown.

Thanks for all the kind compliments!

And the POTD was a nice plus - to
satisfy a curiosity, as I was not
online all day Saturday - anyone
recall which photo was chosen?

As for Fall colors - still waiting
this year, as the pics were from 2016.
They seem to be going from green to
brown this year, most blown off before
they turn - but it's out there in spots!
