CP 2816
Author: akpsteam

Depending on how the CP-KCS merger goes, it has been confirmed by CP CEO Keith Creel in the article below that CP 2816 Empress is planned to be at the head of a passenger special from Calgary, Alberta to Mexico City after the merger is completed AT LEAST by next year.

If in fact that’s true will this not be the first time a steam engine will have operated in three separate countries on the same railway? This could be the chase to end all chases.

Wonder if it'll travel through any "danger zones" on its way through Mexico... that is if this does happen..

What, you think one of the cartels will put a hit on it?

UP ran a special (diesels) to Mexico City, took their own water, would a steamer need an Art Lockman car type water treatment system?

As a purist steam photographer...can there be anything more ridiculous than a CP Hudson, being pushed by a diesel thru a desert, framed in a cactus.  Like the Big Boy on a single track, going thru a corn field.......I'll pass.

That’s a huge disappointment to read I’m sure I can speak for everyone on the forum when I say we were very much looking forward to your coverage of this train when it runs.

Remember that the 2816 is past-due her 15 year boiler inspection & re-certification.

How about said locomotive adorned with the flags of Canada, United States and Mexico?  :)

Seriously, I think it's a nice gesture.  CPR could easily decide to run the special with a diesel, instead.

Over the years, there have been plenty of examples of steam locomotives in places far away from their original assignments (examples: a Burlington 2-8-2 to Grand Canyon Railway and 261 at Steamtown).  See also LoggerHogger's post in today's (Sept 18) steam board.

Looks better going through that rice field than sitting in a museum in California!

Assuming a competent team could be brought in shortly, is a transcontinental trip next year a realistic possibility?

Even if it's not, I think it is a good sign that some of the CEO's first published comments are enthusiasm about a very long steam excursion.

I would have thought you would have left the hobby when they painted 5632 Gold.

Except that it's KCSdM in Mexico, so three countries, two railways.

No, as it will take more than one year to "put the merger together".

One can only hope.

No worse than another CP Hudson that ran around the South with "Southern" painted down the side of it....oh, and also had a diesel behind it numerous times.
