I believe this was the ferry move from Portland to Kennewick for the Washington Steam Fest in October of 1990.  We shot this as well.  It looks like the train which was 7-9 cars.  4449 did the first weekend from Yakima, then it went back to Portland with the tool car, and 700 went to Yakima with its crew car, and used the coaches 4449 left and a few others already there(From the Washington Central).  Was a really neat event, and Great Western 2-8-0 51 ran some short trips and met the longer excursions at Prosser, etc.  With BNSF taking over, likely won't see that event again.  Glad we went!  It was also the only time 4449 ran in 1990.

I don't believe there were any trips in 1993. My guess was the 1998 Bend trip, judging by the consist.

I think this is a Wishram day trip in June 1995 with the Montana Daylight consist.

Lovely image.  The location is just west of Avery, WA on BN's Fallbridge Sub.  Wishram is just a bit further to the east.

Congratulations on Image of the Day Haruo! Not to "date" you Sir, but is it possible you're the most senior photographer to achieve this?

Cheers, Dave

Yes, congratulations!  Do we have an actual date yet, that the photo was taken?

I think this is the 1998 Bend trip. Look at the SP Daylight coach behind the tool car. On multi-day trips from the early '90s to about 2005-ish, 4449 would take along the Clackamas River sleeper as its crew car. However, for whatever reason that car was not present on the '98 Bend trip (must have needed repairs), and instead they used the coach seen in the picture. Said coach often brought up the rear ahead of the Daylight observation car "James J. Gilmore."
