Vacation July 1977 Part 2
Author: SP6190

We left Clovis just after sunrise on Sunday July 24th, heading for Temple where we would spend the night. We had heard that there were about four F7 A-units left running, but we didn’t expect to catch one on the first train of the day. Near Littlefield Texas we caught the 328L heading west on of all things a solid pig and container train with the 999177 tagging along on the rear for good measure. Remember this is 1977. At Slaton we stopped to shoot the ATSF 1809 which had been stuffed and mounted in a local park.

Just east of Slaton, we meet a west bound train with MoPac pool power. The power for this train was two MP SD40-2’s with the 3198 leading. Then near Snyder we caught up with the SF6347 east. The second unit on the set of power was another lease unit, CNW 821 a GP30. Moving farther east we find the 6311 east about ready to depart Pyron after making a pick-up. The third unit in this consist is the 8005, one of the six U30CG’s Santa Fe had acquired for passenger service.

At Kempner we catch the 2055 heading west bound. The second unit is one of the ex-passenger units that had been pulled out of storage. At Temple, after finding a motel for the night, we catch our final train for the day. This is the 2642 heading south to Houston.
