Way up in Upland CA (O&SAH and PE relics)
Author: DNRY122

The Ontario and San Antonio Heights RR opened in 1887 with the legenday mule car service with the mules getting a free ride downhill and earning their keep pulling the car (and their trailer) back uphill from Ontario. At the end of the line was a small station and an amusement park. This station is now preserved as part of San Antonio Park near the north end of Mountain Ave. A few blocks away, where Mountain curves around to the east to meet Euclid Ave., just west of Santa Rosa Court., are the ruins of the Stone Castle hydroelectric power house. The remaining stonework is covered with vines and other greenery, and looks like a good location for an Indiana Jones movie. "Golden Oldie" music fans may remember that novelty hit from the Fifties, "Stranded in the Jungle". The power house was abandoned in 1915 after a disastrous fire; this was about the same time the PE 1200 volt line was completed to San Bernardino, and thereafter, PE 170-class dual-voltage streetcars were assigned. Passenger service was cut back to 24th St. in 1924, and abandoned completely in 1928.

Enough poison oak in that picture to make your skin itch just looking at it.
