Here's a challenge of what you know about EMC/EMD E-Units. The answer key will be posted on Sunday. Have fun!

Hey Fred, aren't we missing a 30 across clue?

Reply: Thanks for catching that. It must have got snipped out during the cut and paste. I have made the correction.

Missed four but I'd argue for Bulbous for 9 down. Bulldog was on F units and E8/9 units. Most spotter's guides refer to a bulbous nose for the E2.

Missed 7 out of 30, so I guess I got a "C" on my "E". I think bulbous is more correct for the E-2 too, but Wikipedia does call it a "bulldog" nose (and as we all know, if it is on the Internet, it must be true). Bon jour!

Reply: Actually, the E-2 nose was the first E model to be tagged with the "Bulldog" nickname. Depending on whose article you read, credit is either given to the E-2 of 1937 or the FT of 1939. Definitely, the E-2 was a design in transition. I'll give you credit for "bulbous."
