Observation car ride in Hornbrook CA
Author: dmaffei

Last month I took a ride through the Siskiyou back-roads(Photobob's recommendation)on the way to Ashland. Hornbrook was quite the place for the SP back before the new line was built to Klamath Falls in the Harriman era. The photo I took last month shows one building standing from the old photo in this 100 year comparison.

Where did everyone go?

Here in California such sights are very rare. The today picture would show many houses and the usual fast food establishments, etc.

It's in escrow now. Dunsmuir is getting way to crowded for me.

Make sure they include the concrete telephone booth in the deal.

Yes, I see the SP concrete telephone booth! About dead center in dmaffei's photo. They are museum pieces these days.

Ah, but Hornbrook is in "Jefferson!"

A common site in western Okla and northwest Texas.

Countless towns across the country have gone from busy to nothing like that. It's sad to me. Sometimes I wonder if progress is all that great, but I know right now I don't want to give up my AC.

The before photo is interesting, I didn't realize there had been so many buildings there. Pretty much an empty lot for the past 30 years. Thought the claim to fame was the tunnel motors into the river event.

Hornbrook is a regular destination for the CalFire Paramedics, actually the mobile home park on the outskirts. Maybe one of the Deputy Sheriffs lives there too because they're always dropping by. Such a nice place...

Looking at Google Earth, I'd say there are two buildings left standing, possibly three. The other building is out of frame on the right of your image, largely hidden by trees. But it pretty well matches the building on the right of the cross-street form the 100 year old image. There is another narrow building attached to it, which may well be a survivor too, but there is too little character to the building and too many trees to be sure.
