The BC Rail RDCs Meet a Freight at Pinesul
Author: MartyBernard

North of Prince George the excursion RDCs had a meet with a freight on May 23, 1992 just outside of Chetwynd, BC at the Pinesole sulfur load out. Here is a 7 photo sequence.

1. The RDCs pulled into and occupied siding with plenty of room for them. I have no idea what the conductor is communicating to the engineer in the photo. Most of the passengers have detrained.

2. The freight is approaching.

3. BCOL SD40-2 751 is the leader. On my scanner I heard the train had 110 loads and 43 empties for 12,420 tons with 6 locos (2 were mid-train).

7. Two cabooses. Is the engineer's finger on the radio telling the dispatcher "We are clear to go."

What a show!

Enjoy,

Nice sequence, lots of BCRail details in there as well.

Note the two cabeese, one green and one new colours with the famous 'Conductor's window' on the near corner. Nice comparison.

Any idea what the TOFC was carrying and where it was going?

Likely an empty trailer headed south. In the BCR TOFC days, good for the north made regular trips from North Vancouver, and the trailers carried food, beer and dry goods.

Interesting - I didn't ever see that the SD40-2's were capable of having mid-train helpers as both master and slave. I only ever saw an M420B+other combo as the receiving units. Thanks!
